Little angel or little devil? Capturing expressions in photographs

Child Portrait Photography - Essex Family Photographer

Since learning about depth of field in images it’s something I naturally reach for from my photography tool kit when taking headshots of adults but even more so with babies and children.

There is something extra precious about capturing little toes and fingers in great detail in photographs and I love the same effect on eyes and eyelashes.

For me starting in photography was always so that I could capture our children growing up in images for us to treasure. Seeing our baby daughter close up in all her beauty (yes, we think she is beautiful! – as you do yours) made me fall in love with my type of close work photography.

Once I have the right light (in these images captured in a gorgeous old barn) I am naturally going to be looking for capturing some great expressions. What I really want is to be able to capture the expression your child does that you love – not necessarily a smile.

To this end I will do most things and make a complete fool of myself if necessary! I am not able to sing or dance in any shape of form but you may get to see it if I photograph your child! (apologies up front!!)

I will have a bit more serious conversation with your child – I personally love a shot of a serious child looking into camera – it’s like seeing an old soul in their eyes. So that may be a question they need to think about.

I may resort to slightly naughty jokes! To get that real cheeky expression or proper laughter – for boys that’s definitely a fart or bum joke – most seem to like those for more years than you would have thought. However, it can also be who has the smelliest feet at home? Or who does pop offs the most.

In the cheeky image below jokes did come into it, as did him talking to mum behind me and him looking at her with a real loving laughing smile.

These next set of images are actually our youngest son. He is not too helpful at letting me photograph him nowadays but the promise of him getting to sit on a proper tractor helped on this occasion.

I was really trying to get a particular expression we as a family love that he pulls – we call it ‘fishface’ and it’s something he has done throughout his life, but I think less so these days.  I could not capture it on this occasion but am on the lookout for it before he stops doing it as too grown up!!

What are your favourite expressions your children or other half pulls? When do you see them? And are they aware they pull them? Please do let me know in the comments on the blog below – always interests me as so many different expressions!

If you would like me to try and capture them then please do contact me. Main thing I can promise you is a natural, happy relaxed photoshoot!!    Please contact me here.
