Autumn leaves children’s photography – the difference a year makes!!

One of the things we were always told as parents was to enjoy the children as they will grow so fast. To be honest until your first born finally flies the nest you don’t have much opportunity to really understand the advice you have been given!
The children growing up years were always so busy from babies needing you constantly and no sleep! toddlers and young children needing lots of your help and still not enough sleep!
Then its kids’ parties, clubs, afterschool activities, the teenage years (stressful! – lack of sleep from worrying!) and then young adults and seeing them start their way in the world.
Now you can get lots of sleep but would much prefer to see said little darling as annoying as they can be – and why one message a week??? 7 days in a week, 24 hours in a day, funny though if they need something who do they call!! Oh well we did something right, I guess!
So much going on and you try to help them throughout however you can whilst also working, trying to see family and friends and generally stay sane! (I didn’t mention the housework as it’s not my fave thing to do but for many of you that will take up a HUGE amount of time as well!)
I was lucky though that as I was doing my dream job of photography, I did manage to get lots of images of our children growing up as well as my clients. Okay not all have been finished and sorted into albums, but they will be, and we can enjoy those memories as well as showing the kids their early years.
So, one of the best bits of my job is working with families regularly over the years and capturing the changes for them. This little lady I met for the first-time last autumn and she is a complete character!!
Shoots with her involve quite abit of ‘no photos today’ ……. from her – not me! and lots of running around and praying (on my part) that some shots capture her gorgeous personality!!! Mum knows her little girl so well and realises there is no point stressing, asking her to smile or even bribery! (that normally works with most of the little people and amazingly teenagers as well!!). It’s the perfect approach for me, as parents stressing on shoots about the kids really does not work so it’s much better to try a different tac.
Instead, Mum joins in games and distractions – even when heavily pregnant <3. So last year we did lots of leaf throwing, gathering sticks and checking out tree roots. This year was throwing berries at my diffuser and one another, playing in the water feature, riding a tyre and climbing a tree!!
Mum is very happy again with the results this year and has already asked for a shoot next autumn 2021 and I am so looking forward to seeing them again then, along with the new addition to the family. I wonder what adventures we will have next year??
